Free, anonymous HIV testing is available at several clinics in Okinawa.
In Okinawa, there are centers in Haebaru, Naha, Okinawa City, Nago, Miyako and Ishigaki.
There are two types of HIV tests you can take: the “regular” test (you have to go back a week later to get the results), and the “same day” test. Both tests are anonymous and free of charge, but you may have to pay for other STD tests. At some clinics you can just show up, but at others you have to make an appointment.
You have to fill out a short form where you write down your “name” and age. You can write anything you want for your “name” : your initials, just your first name, a complete pseudonym, whatever. They copy it down, along with an ID number so that you can use it for identification when you come and get your results.
After the short ID form, there is a long form asking about health history, sex partners, needle use, why you are having the test, etc. It is all in Japanese, and there is no English copy, although they said they may get an English translation made in the near future. (Update: this may not be the case anymore, but editor has not had personal experience)
After filling out the forms, you go to get blood drawn. If you do the same day test, it takes about an hour for the results No matter which test you do, you have to meet with the doctor to get the results. You also have to hang on to the paper with your ID number, “name” and age on it, because it is the only way to prove that you are the person who took the test.
The following locations have HIV/AIDS testing facilities. All of them list that they test for Syphilis (梅毒(ばいどく)), Chlamydia (クラミジア), and Hepatitis B & C (B, C型(がた)肝炎(かんえん)).
